Are pregnant women more at risk for COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a new disease and it is still being learned how it affects pregnant women. To date, there is currently no evidence that puts pregnant women at a higher risk.
In general, pregnant women experience changes in their bodies that may increase the risk of other illnesses, such as viral respiratory infections and for this reason, it is important for pregnant women, especially those at high risk to take precautions to protect against the possibility of becoming ill.
What precautions should pregnant women take?
Follow all the precautions as listed on the Government of Canada Public Health website.
What are the changes now for childbirth?
Majority of hospitals and birth centers have implemented a no-visitor policy but are allowing one support person during delivery. It is recommended that you contact them and get to know what the policies are. If you plan on giving birth at home, you’ll need to contact your midwife.
Can mother to fetus/child transmission happen?
There is currently no evidence of mother to child transmission through childbirth or in utero of Covid-19. It is known that most viruses can cross the placenta to the fetus, however, at this time, this is not known with coronavirus.
Can mothers breastfeed their newborns?
Yes, as breastfeeding lowers your baby’s risk of infections and illnesses. However, remember to take the necessary precautions when doing so.
